This is just one of several "trans-border" conservation projects led by the GNLCC Rocky Mountain Partner Forum and Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y). Y2Y was responsible for initiating the "collaborative" for this in 2006, which of course involved "government agencies", which would include the British Columbia government as they too belong to the GNLCC Steering Committee. What it did not include were Canadian or U.S. citizens. Candace Batycki, Y2Y, BC and Yukon Program Director is working with the B.C. government while Kim Trotter Y2Y, US Program Director works the U.S. side of the collaborative.
"Team Canada", along with Idaho Fish & Game and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are using grizzlies as an "umbrella" species and have studied grizzly movement between our countries to identify "linkage areas" between protected areas. Linkage areas will eventually lead to protected areas for "connectivity", followed by land use restrictions. As a result of this study they proceeded with a "linkage area assessment and prioritization analysis" and have already looked at the Creston Valley for these purposes. Eventually the government will be "integrated" into their management planning and actions. The B.C. government is already involved being one of the funders of this study, again validating that the government works and collaborates with conservation initiatives, not citizens.
